Conference: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Italian Audiovisual Media

In recent years, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies have taken on a central role in the audiovisual media sector, where diversity is promoted both in content and in production practices. From the new Oscar guidelines to diversity branding strategies by platforms such as Netflix, and Italian initiatives like RAI’s 2022 project on female representation, the topic lies at the heart of both public and industry debates.

However, the gap between rhetoric and practice remains wide: the risks of diversity-washing and the tensions between social justice, market logic, and representation continue to surface, particularly within the broader context of woke and cancel culture.

The final conference of the WokeIt project explores these dynamics within the Italian media landscape, examining recent changes and the tensions between inclusion and normativity in RAI’s audiovisual productions.
